IT'S BEEN A DOG DAY

Hello my darlinks

It's been a busy day here at number 7!  I got out of bed really early as I knew it was to be a stinker of a hot day and wanted to do my walk early.  Papa was still asleep, so I moved quietly, attached Molly to her lead and tip-toed out.  Unfortunately, I hadn't gone very far when I realized that Molly's ear was giving her a lot of trouble.  As she was constantly shaking her head as we walked, I decided not to walk too far.

When I arrived home and chatted to Papa about her, we decided not to let things go until Monday but make an appointment with the vet for this morning.  Papa rang the vet at Herriot House and made an appointment for 9.00am.  The vet was wonderful with Molly and took her away to give her ears a good clean.  While he was at it, he trimmed her nails too.

He said that she has a 'bit' of an infection in one ear but I think the grasses are affecting her quite badly at the moment.  She constantly licks her paws too and the vet said that this is a sign her paws are itchy and they are itchy because of grasses she walks on.  He said there's not a lot we can do to prevent it.

However he did give her a cortisone injection to help with the 'itching', some anti-biotics for her ear and a wash for her ears that we have to do twice a day.

I've had to do a 'medical time sheet' up to keep track of all her medications!

Here's a cute photograph of Molly and Spot taken some time ago.

She is looking so much better already.  I can't see her at the moment, so I think she must be lying on the couch in Papa's office listening to him playing his guitar.

Papa got chatting with the vet whose family originally came from Fort William which you pass through on the road to Arnisdale.  Papa was telling him that we have the DVDs of ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL and he said that watching that programme as a child was what inspired him to become a vet.  As you can see he even called his veterinary practice Herriot House after James Herriot.

He also said the actor who played James Herriot was in Toowoomba some time back and when he saw the practice, stopped his car and went inside.

What a surprise it must have been for all the vets.

Papa asked the vet if the people he meets are similar to the type of people James Herriot used to meet and the vet said "Exactly the same!"  And he said that becoming a vet was exactly as he imagined it would be.

Before I headed down to visit Margaret down the road, I gave Auntie Emma a call.  She had come across a LOST dog somewhere in her travels this morning and had taken it home and put it in her back garden.  She said it was a Kelpie type dog.

It had a collar but there were no details attached so she rang the Council and they said if they came and picked it up, the owners would have to pay quite a lot of money to get it back.  Auntie Emma was a bit worried about that in case the owners didn't have much money and decided to just leave it with the Council.  If they did do that then the chances were that the dog could be 'put down' ):

So kind Auntie Emma has decided to keep it in her garden until the owners come home, hoping they will telephone the Council to see if their dog has been handed in and the Council will give them Auntie Emma's telephone number.

Doggie story number 3!!!!

I'm not sure if I've told you about the dog that lives two doors down from us.  It's a brown dog that just loves attention which I usually give it when I'm coming back from my morning walk.  I don't think it gets much attention at all from its owners, which is sad.  Sometimes, from my kitchen window I can see the owners not being very nice with the dog which I've found out is called LADY.

Colette popped in to see us yesterday and I was telling her about the dog and about how worried I felt about it and when she was leaving to go home, we wandered up to the house (the owners were at work - they work all day) to give Lady a pat and some attention.  Before we could say, "Lovely dog!",  Lady had jumped the fence and was lying on her back wanting to be scratched.  We did our best and then put her back in and again she jumped the fence.  She was very dirty as I think she sleeps under the house and probably never gets a bath so Colette had to come back inside and wash her hands before leaving.

She managed to get into her car while I stood outside the gate with Molly in my arms and Lady jumping for attention.  I couldn't get inside my own gate and had to shout for Papa.  He came and stood inside the gate but with his arm outside giving Lady a good scratch and I managed to squeeze inside with Molly.  We had to leave her in the end hoping it wouldn't be long until her owners arrived home.  By this time it was about 6.15pm.

This morning Papa said he could here her whining in the garage or perhaps she was tied up under the house.

This morning I popped down to see Margaret and after I came home I asked Papa to check if Lady was alright.  He went next door, where all the building is going on and peered over the fence and there was poor Lady tied to the clothes hoist.  She had obviously got herself a bit tied up in knots because she could hardly move.  She was also in the full sun and with the temperature in the full sun probably around the 40 degree mark, we became very worried about her.

It is illegal to go on to someone else's property, so Papa came back home and telephoned the RSPCA which stands for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.  He had a good chat with them and they said they would send someone around.

After we had finished our sandwich, Papa and I went back to have another look, and Lady was gone. All that was lying on the ground was her collar and lead as I think the RSPCA bring their own.  So it's a relief to know that she is now in a sheltered place, getting lots of cool water and some loving attention.

I'm not sure what happens from here, but I will keep you informed.

Love Nanxxx
