AUTUMN

Hello my lovelies!

Thought I would post some autumn photographs for you today.  As you can see, the sun has now moved to the north so we are getting some lovely sunshine on the side verandah.  I moved the carpet and the chair round from the back deck last week.

I took this photograph while sitting at the table on the front verandah.  Can you see the tree across the road - the pink one.  Well, that is a  golden rain tree.  It has fantastic yellow flowers in spring and what you see at this time of the year are the seeds.  I've got a feeling you can no longer buy these trees here as they are considered a pest.  It must be all those seeds - once they fall, I imagine they seed everywhere.

The tree on the other side of the verandah is one of the beautiful maples and as you can see, it hasn't put on its autumn coat yet.

And...the camellia outside our bedroom window.

And...some roses still blooming.  If you look closely, you will see buds still to flower.

This morning Papa and I were very busy around the place.  I hauled the ladders up from the shed, ran some hot water put some soapy stuff into a bucket, grabbed some cloths and set to and cleaned all the fans.  Now that we are well into autumn, I don't think we will be using them again until nearer the end of the year.

While I was doing that, Papa was outside putting finishing touches with his paintbrush to the front fence.  Over the course of the summer it had turned green with mould!  Through the week he's been busy washing it off with very special 'stuff' from BMS.  I'm hoping all the plants and grass nearby don't die.  Time will tell and I'll keep you informed.  The fence is all nice and white again.

Tomorrow, Papa and I are on 'tea duty' after church.  We haven't done this before so should be interesting.  We'll go up the hill a bit earlier than usual and set things up.  I've made a batch of shortbread to take with me.

Did I tell you that Bob and Bev are coming to St David's now too.  It's lovely having them there and after the service they usually come back to our place for some morning tea.

Our minister Andrew usually sends through an email during the week saying what he is going to be preaching on and also what hymns we will be singing.   THIS is one of the hymns we will be listening to on the audio visual - we sometimes sing along as well.  We will be singing along with THIS one too.  I've just had a look at them and the words in the songs are beautiful.

Andrew has been preaching from the book of Mark for quite some time.  Tomorrow he's preaching on the healing of the blind man at Bethsaida written about in chapter 8.

Well my dears I shall away.  I've just taken wee Molly for a walk.  She's quite down at the moment; very quiet.  I think she's missing Spotty Boy.  I'm sure he won't be missing her as he's happy as long as he's getting attention!

THESE BLUE SKIES WILL TELL ME....

Hello my lovelies!

Isn't this oil painting of Emma's just beautiful?

She has hung it in her kitchen and I imagine that when she comes in in the morning and looks at it, the joy of the morning must fill her wee heart.

Don't you love the way the painter has painted the side bits too?

THE FINISHED CUPBOARD

Hello my lovelies

Here are a couple more photographs of the finished cupboard Papa was working on.

I have decorated the top 'Emily Henderson' style.  Emily Henderson is a stylist and shows you how to 'style' all the tops and bookcases in your home.

Auntie Emma decided she didn't like this painting any longer so we are now the proud owners.  I think the flowers may be anemones which were your Great Grandmother Mary's favourite flowers.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT 12.57PM

Hello my lovelies

It's been a busy time here in Kenneth Street and Toowoomba in general.

We've had the flower festival, open gardens, quilting trail and a lovely visit from Auntie Emma and Fergus.

Papa and I went to see a wonderful garden out at Haden which is between Crows Nest and Goombundgee. I can't tell you how dry everything is at the moment.  The drive out was almost soul destroying and then we drove through the property into an oasis.  I can't find the camera that I took the photographs on so will have to leave them for another day - when I find the camera!

Today the temperature is up in the low 30s and it's supposed to be like this for the rest of the week with no rain in sight.  Today is quite windy too - not good.  As you can imagine we are on EXTREME fire alert.

Papa finished off the cupboard and it is now sitting in pride of place in the kitchen with a gorgeous painting Auntie Emma passed on to us.

Do you like?  I have pretty dishes inside the cupboard which you can catch a glimpse of through the mesh on the sides and in the drawer I have put my place mats and serviettes.

I must dash.  Papa is calling me for lunch.  I think he may have made a Caesar Salad.  And...I'm sure he's set it up outside on the back deck with a lovely cool glass of white wine to go with.

Molly says "Hi!"

PAPA AT WORK ON THE BOTTOM-HALF-OF-THE-DRESSER

Hello there my lovelies!

I just took this photograph from my office window.

Auntie Emma decided to pass her old dresser on to me as her new house has heaps and heaps of built-in bookshelves and she didn't think she would have a place for it.

We took the top part off and put the two pieces into the back of the car, came home and unloaded into the garage.  As you can see, the top part is still off and Papa has pulled the whole of the bottom half to bits and slowly rebuilt it all.  We have decided just to use the bottom part.  Not quite sure what we'll do with the top part.  Will put that in a basket until we decide.  Papa has taken off the old wire screens that were on each side and will replace them with new screens, similar to this idea.

I think they must have used the screen idea on the sides in the past and perhaps placed foods inside the dresser.  The screens would have helped a breeze keep the food cool.

The drawer has also been taken out and rebuilt as have the two cupboard doors and shelf for inside.

It's going to be so lovely when it's all finished.  Papa is in the process of painting it now.  The colour hasn't come out too well in this photograph.  It is a Porter's colour called Breakwater.  I'm not sure, but I think that may be the colour your Mamma used for your new kitchen in Canberra.

I just Googled the colour.

We are going to put the finished 'bottom-half-of-the dresser' in the kitchen just beside the door to the side verandah.  We also have a lovely painting that Auntie Emma passed on to us which will be above the 'bottom-half-of-the-dresser' and I'm looking forward to placing lots of lovely books, objects and a vase of flowers on top when it's finished.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON AT 3.44PM

Hello my lovelies

It's been a quiet day today for Papa and me.  Papa has been busy pottering in the shed, practicing his guitar and popping out for some shopping.

I did the chores and since lunchtime, I've been working on our budget for next year!  Today is 30 June and the end of the financial year here in Australia.  Because I keep a very close track on everything Papa and I spend, I was able to print off a report on all our spending for the past twelve months.  I am very sorry to inform you that we overspent :)  This year, we have vowed to be good and stay within the limits.  Papa said that if we overspend in one area, we have to cut back on another.  I'm not quite sure what he means by this but I think he might mean we have to cut back on our gin, whisky and wine!

Yesterday I had a lovely day.  Robyn has a quilting group that meets at her home each Thursday and she invited me along to yesterday's get-together.  It was only a few ladies there as it is the school holidays here at the moment and a lot of people are away.  I caught up with a few folk I hadn't seen for ages and ages which was nice.  It was also Robyn's sister Dawn's birthday and the group had put together a gorgeous 'birthday box' for her.  Dawn loves all things leopard-printy and the ladies made her coasters, place mats, a little make-up bag and an apron, all in different leopard prints.  As you can imagine, she was just thrilled to bits.  I took along my Hebridean quilt for a 'show and tell'.  Everyone loved it.  I also took my Christmas quilt to work on.

Frances, one of the ladies was cutting away at material and as I was wondering what she was up to, I went over, sat beside her and asked her to explain what she was doing.  Frances works with a pair of scissors a lot in her quilting work.  She showed me photographs of some of her projects and girls, they are just wonderful.  For example there was one wall-hanging quilt which was a gorgeous duck.  In making this duck, Frances used her scissors to cut out, very, very carefully lots and lots of flowers from her chosen fabric - in this case the main colour was pink.  These flowers were then laid next to each other and sewn down with the machine.  Before she starts the cutting process, she irons on Visoflex to the back of the fabric. Here's a link to see how Visoflex is used.  Frances then cuts out the bits she wants from her material and when she has all the bits she needs, she lays them carefully on her backing fabric, and very carefully irons them down.  This holds the flowers (or whatever has been cut out) on the fabric until they have been sewn down.  The flowers have not been turned under, the edges are raw.  The next step is to sew down all the edges of the flowers and Frances does this with her sewing machine, sewing one eighth of an inch from the edge.  I've asked Frances if she would mind sending me a photograph of the duck or something similar and when she does, I'll forward on to you.

Talking of photographs, Auntie Emma sent through some photographs that she took on her wee trip to Byron Bay.  One special outing was the outing to a gorgeous gallery which features not only the works of Margaret Olley but also a set-up of her home.  Here's a description Auntie Emma wrote.

So they constructed the rooms and installed the some of the actual windows from her home in Sydney!!!  So it was like peering into her world.  They had Radio National (Margaret Throsby) playing inside (but not out) so she must have loved listening to it while she worked.   Then in other areas they had simple cut outs.  Looking in was like seeing hundreds of still lifes.

And here are some photographs:

These two photographs are taken in or around Byron Bay.

Can you see the cows in this photograph above?

Well my lovelies, I'm away to have a hot cuppa as it's freezing in here.

Hope you're enjoying Montpellier.

GARDENING CLUB, QUILTING, WASHING WOOLLENS, PAINTING AND VISITING

Hello my lovelies

It is the most beautiful Autumn day today.  The cold blast that came from the south over the last couple of days seems to have bypassed us, thank goodness.

Papa has been out to BMS to pick up odds and bods and is now sitting reading the Saturday paper.  I notice as I look out on to the side verandah that he is all set up to continue his painting in his office.

Today is the second coat on the ceiling.  He's being very good and having regular breaks as his back has been giving him a lot of trouble.  He's made an appointment with the doctor for next week for another injection in his back.  This gives him a lot of relief but unfortunately only lasts a few months.

Next door is coming on great guns.  Yesterday they put up the rails on the back deck and from my kitchen and our back deck it looks very pretty - very Paddington if you know what I mean.

This photograph is taken from our back deck, looking through the shutters.

The house still isn't painted yet and as the new owners will be moving in soon, I rather suspect that Lawrence the Builder may get the painters to take over the task he was going to try and do himself.

I had a lovely time at the Garden Club yesterday morning.  It was way out at Middle Ridge on the corner of a main road.  The garden was very small, just a small covered patio and the narrow bit down the side of the house.  The patio was just outside the sitting area in the living/kitchen area and was covered over with a sail.  The groundcover was slabs separated with pebbles.  Just looked at that word separated.  This is a word often spelt incorrectly.  If you ever have to write it, remember it has 'a rat' in the middle.  Back to the slabs.  In amongst the gravel, the owners had planted some small plants.  The very small patio was bordered on the one side by the house and on the other sides by the outside fences.  Along the fence beside the patio the owners had planted camelias, a gadenia and on the fence itself some star jasmine.

Down the side of the house, the owners had planted star jasmine all the way down and had trained it up quite high.  It was a beautiful feature and must fill the area with gorgeous scent when it is in bloom.

When I first arrived, there was a delicious looking morning tea spread out on the kitchen bench which included tiny chocolate brownies, what looked like a hazelnut cake and little quiches.  The serviettes, of course, were ones with pictures of plants on them.  And the mugs?  Gorgeous, gorgeous.  They were all different designs of blue and white Spode mugs.

After morning tea and our wee walk around the small garden, we listened and watched a florist giving a demonstration and ideas in respect to making a bouquet.  She was a lovely lady and said that she has a 'ministry' in flowers. I'm not quite sure what that entails but would love to know.  She has a shop in the Bell Street Mall, just off Ruthven Street, so I shall pop in and have a chat next time I'm in town.  She sounded as though she originally came from an Eastern European country.

She also gives classes on flower arranging.  Will give that some thought too!  I could definitely do with some advice in that area.  The collection of 'flowers' she had on the table were unusual.  There were two banksias, rosemary, reeds, palm fronds, succulents, gum leaves and some unusual shrub-like flowers.

Here is the bouquet she made while she was talking to us about all the things she was doing.

Can you see how she has bent over the palm-fronds?  She bent them over and tied them with florist tape.  She also gave a couple of tips about flower arranging.  You must strip all the stem that is going to be in water.  When you are putting a bouquet together, you hold it in your hand and as you begin to add the different plants to your hand, you make sure that as you add, you add in the one direction.

With the little succulent, she put it on the top of a florist stem and just taped it to the stem because succulents such as these ones don't have stems.

It was a very interesting talk and quite funny in parts.  I'm not quite sure what was funny as the battery in my hearing aid decided to die, but I laughed along with everyone else.

Because it was my first visit, I knew only one other person, but I wandered around and chatted to different ladies.  They seem a lovely group and I'm looking forward to getting to know them better.
When I started talking with some of the ladies and mentioned our garden out at Cabarlah, they knew the garden well as they had gone there when it was an Open Garden so that was something I could talk forever on.

After the Garden Club, I headed over to Robyn's for quilting.  It was a quiet day there as only Jenny and Bonnie were there (along with Robyn).  It worked out quite well though as Robyn was able to spend quite a bit of time with Bonnie who had made heaps and heaps of flowers, leaves and stems for a very large border for her quilt.  Both Bonnie and Robyn worked away placing everything in between chatting, cups of coffee and lunch.

Today is a quiet day at home with Papa painting and me catching up on some housework.  Although it is a bit difficult with everything higgilty piggilty.  I've done a big wash which included some woollens so there's a lovely smell of Martha Gardener's Eucalyptus Woolwash pervading the kitchen.

Tomorrow, we've been invited to Sasha and Eleanora's for lunch and for a soup 'tea' we've been invited along with Charis and Neil to Anne and Roger's out at Cabarlah tomorrow evening.

A lovely wee photograph of a knitted radish for you.

Well my darlings I shall away.  Thinking of you both as you sleep in your wee white beds as I type.

PAPA'S OFFICE

Hello my lovelies

"David, you don't have to do this you know!" I said.

"No! No!  Connie!  I insist!" and so with my help, he started moving the furniture out of his office in preparation to redecorate.

Stuff in the library (sewing room).

Guest room transformed into a new computer room and music room.

Lovely verandah transformed into a builder's yard.

Skirtings coming off.

He's a darling!  As you can imagine, this idea was from both of us.

Shall keep you informed of the progress.

A NEW COUSIN

It's been a big weekend in Milngavie with the arrival of Bryan and Allison's new baby girl.  With her arrival, Auntie Margaret and Uncle Louis are now grandparents and by the look of Auntie Margaret's face she is a very happy Granny!   I spoke to Auntie Margaret last night and she said that Allison and Bryan didn't have a name yet.  They have a few ideas but were waiting to see their baby before making a final choice.  I wonder what name they will give her.

Papa and I had a lovely day yesterday.  It was a beautiful day, not too hot.  I continued watering the plants and trees and finally finished around lunch time.  It's good to know that every tree and shrub has had a good drink after all the hot weather we have had.

In the afternoon Bob and Bev came for afternoon tea.  I had made some banana and walnut cake so we sat in the garden chatting and munching on our cake!

I found some more information on this painting which hangs in the Edinburgh Art Gallery.  If you click on the link WEE DUG Liliane, you will be able to read some more information about it.

I saw this painting on one of my blogs and it quite took my breath away.  It reminds me of how much God loves us.  That even though he created the Heavens and the Earth, he stoops to not only come to earth and live as a man, but to show how we should live - by serving and loving one another.  I wonder what Peter is thinking?

Today we are heading up to Mt Coolum to spend a few days with Auntie Emma and Fergus.  Auntie Emma and Uncle Michael are selling their house up there and because they are as they are going to have it for only a couple of more weeks, Auntie Emma decided to spend this week there and enjoy it while she can.  We are waiting for the TV man to come.  Once he has come, we will hit the road and head north.  Papa will make a lovely picnic lunch which we will eat by the lake at Kilcoy.

The internet at Mt Coolum is very poor but I will do my best to keep in touch while we're up there.

STILL IN THE MIDST OF PAINTING THE KITCHEN AND LIBRARY

Here's a photograph of Papa putting up a couple of architraves on the window in the library yesterday.

Well, it's all go here at number seven!  Papa's just finished mowing the lawn and is now charging around with the whipper snipper.  I can see where I'm sitting - out on the back deck - and hear the digger next door which is doing goodness knows what but includes going quite deep with its front shovel in the back garden.

The painters have arrived and are spreading out all the dust sheets again and the air is getting full again of the smell of paint.

Molly isn't happy tied up here beside me and is thinking "Oh no!  Not another day like yesterday!"  She doesn't like being tied up as she is unable to keep everything in order beyond the fence :)

I'm not sure what I'm going to do today with everything all higglty pigglty.  And it's to be very hot again today which makes it almost impossible to do much anyway.  I've just checked your weather for Wednesday.  You're to have a top of zero and a minimum of minus four so make sure when you head off to school that you are super warmly wrapped up.  Mama said that your bus trip to school is beautiful as it travels through gorgeous countryside.  The next time she or Dada take you to school Liliane, would you ask them to take a photograph for me and then I can imagine what your daily journey to school looks like from the window of your bus.

How is your gymnastic course going?  Have you been able to do any new gymnastic-type moves?

Have you heard from your Daddy yet?  Has he arrived safely?  If he sends any photographs, would you get Mama to send one through.  I've just checked what language they speak in Ethiopia.  It's AMHARIC and looks very strange - lots of squiggles.

It's just after 4.00pm and the painters have all gone home.  They'll be back tomorrow morning at8.00am and have said they won't finish tomorrow, it will be Friday before they finish.

They put some of my chosen colour - Angel Shoes on one of the walls in the library and a short time later I head Christ shouting "Connie!  Could you come and check that this colour is OK?"  And OK it wasn't.  It didn't look at all like the colour on the card and Chris himself agreed.  He took a bit of the colour from the tin and smeared it next to the colour on the card and indeed, it was the same colour.  It was so PURPLE Liliane.  You know how much I love purple, but not this one, no siree!  He tried halving the colour with white and then three quartering it, but no matter what he did we didn't like it.

The final decision after a lot of thought is that we will go with the colour in the hall.  The kitchen is nearly finished and looks more green than blue (it's the same colour as in the guest room and my bedroom) so we didn't want to come in the front door to Brazilian Grey, then another colour in the library and then yet another colour in the kitchen.  So, Brazilian Grey in the hall and the library.  I think it should work well.  There are all the books, the dresser, rug and cream curtains to break it up, so should be fine - fingers and toes crossed.

You can see how the painter was trying different shades of the Angel Shoes colour, but it was way to purple and lavendery.

In this photograph you can see the hall colour - the darker colour and the Angel Shoes.  Do you think we've made the right decision Liliane?  I hope so.  We'll know tomorrow when the library gets the full treatment!

I can hear Papa!  He has just brought the car in.  As always I hope he hasn't run over dear Molly.  But she always goes to him when he opens the gate and jumps in beside him for the ride down the driveway.  When she gets out of the car to greet me, it's as though she has been on a long trip.

Well of for ma wee get-together with Papa in the garden.

efaqrehallahw  xxx  If you turn the 'e's upside down and add two dots above the 'a's this is Ethiopian for Love youxxxx

THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR

Yesterday, I popped in to see how Keith the builder is going with his renovations on the house next door.

Can you see that he's taken down the small porch where the old couple used to sit?  I wish he would take down the two terrible fly screens too.  In fact I don't know why he just doesn't pull the whole lot down and start again.

I had a lovely chat to Keith who is very excited about his renovations of the house.  Inside he has pulled out everything and is going to add some more on to the house out the back.

Here's a photograph of the inside at the moment.

Still quite a bit of work to be done!

Well, the painters all arrived this morning.  There are three of them.  Chris and his son Sam and another young man called Cody.  They all seem very nice.  Everything is draped with plastic and dust sheets.  They used a  Gladwrap-type of stuff to cover the bookcase so that all the books won't get dusty.

They've been busy sanding and filling up gaps and any bits on the wood that's a bit rough.  I noticed that Chris was busy with a very long pole doing the kitchen ceiling, and from the looks of it, the ceiling in the 'library' has been done too.

Troy Markey the electrician came in today as well to change some sockets that are a bit yucky and old with fresh new ones.  He also brought a new fan for the library.  The one that was there was way too high and Troy couldn't get an extension pole to make it lower.  So a new one it is and it's just lovely.

Papa and I are a bit locked-in, he in his office and side verandah and me in my office.  Sometimes I go into his office and lie down on the couch with my book.  When it gets a bit cooler, we will take ourselves out into the garden with a wee beverage.

I went to the library this morning to see if I could get a few interior design books.  I ended up with heaps on a table in the library, but most were pretty old.  The two I did bring home weren't too bad, but not brilliant.  One was on Scandinavian design which I really like but the book was just full of these strange chairs the Scandinavians are famous for.  So that's one to go back to the library.  The other one was called FINISHING TOUCHES and again not much in it to get me overly excited, so back that one goes too.

I'm reading a great book at the moment called MY BRILLIANT FRIEND by Elena Ferrante an Italian author.  I'm not reading it in Italian though, I'm reading an English translation - just in case you were wondering;)  So, while I was at the library, I ordered the next two as this one that I'm reading at the moment is the first of a trilogy.  Although the librarian said the author actually did a fourth in the series.  I am so enjoying the book.  Perhaps you can tell Mama about it.  She would just love it.

After the library I headed for home and just as I was heading into the lift, out of the corner of my eye I saw the cafĂ© and quickly rushed in and picked up a couple of sandwiches for lunch.  Daddy was so pleased when I arrived home.  "You brought some lunch!" he exclaimed when I fell out of the car with all my books and purchases.  I was very pleased with myself for remembering we wouldn't be able to get into the kitchen what with the painters an all.

After collecting the sandwiches, I made my way to a sewing shop which wasn't too far away to see if they had any light boxes.  Do you remember I had a light box in Summerfield which I used for tracing shapes on to fabric?  Anyway I managed to get one which is super thin and about the size of an A4 sheet of paper.  It will come in handy not only here but to throw in my bag if I need it at quilting.  So Liliane, I'm really getting ready to knock the Hebridean quilt on the head.

Also popped into Hannas and picked up some new tea-towels.  A good number of my present ones are beginning to look like rags.  Also picked up new oil-cloth material for the kitchen table.  It's in grey and will match the kitchen quite well.  The walls are going to be in the greeny/blue we have in our bedroom so all the 'red' bits are out the window now!

Well I'd better go now.

Love Nanxxxxx

NOW, WHERE DOES THIS RIVER BEGIN?

Wouldn't that be a nice project to do?  Imagine walking alongside a river and saying to yourself "I wonder where this river begins?" and then setting off to find the 'source'.  Very famous books have been written about people searching for the 'source' of rivers.  One that comes to my mind is a search for the source of the River Nile in Egypt.  I'm not sure if the source of the River Nile is actually in Egypt because if you start following a river, say, in Egypt you might find yourself travelling into other countries where there is still a trickle of water.  I can just imagine Freya on an expedition like that, binoculars around her neck, pith helmet on her head, good boots and exploring clothes on, taking notes as she goes.

Well, Papa has gone to get some wood from the hardware store.  After we took down the curtains in the library in preparation for the painters tomorrow, I noticed that there weren't any architraves around the window.  The window has just been set into the wall with no wooden surround.  The wooden surround around the windows is called and architrave.

So like the good Papa he is, he said "Rightyo Connie!  I'll get that fixed today."  I'll take a photograph of him working when he gets back.

Today the weather is much better and the sky is blue, blue, blue!  Unfortunately, we're back into fairly hot weather again tomorrow and for the next few days, so the painters will really feel it, especially when they are working on the ceilings as hot air rises.  But we've got the air-conditioner if things get too bad and they don't mind me shutting the doors - although thinking about the fumes from the paint they may not want that.

Because of the preparations for the painters coming tomorrow, I think we may have to cancel our wee picnic out to Allora to see the sunflowers.  Perhaps next week. This week seems to be turning out to be quite a busy one.  Today is getting organized for the painters, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday is being here for the painters and Friday I have my first monthly get-together for the year with Robyn.

I'm so looking forward to getting back into the routine after Christmas.  I've decided I'm going to get cracking on my Hebridean quilt on Friday.  I have plenty 'quilting' to do on the Christmas quilt and the Provence Star quilt but no real 'handwork' and there's plenty of handwork on the Hebridean quilt.

I received an email from Auntie Margaret and Uncle Louis to say that the baby quilt arrived safely.  I hope they take a photograph of Allison and Bryan opening the package.

Well I shall away and have some breakfast.  It was so lovely speaking to you both last night.  I hope you both have a wonderful week at school.

Love Nanxxxx  PS  I'm attaching a link from a blog I like to read.  This lady who lives in England went in search of where the river that she lives near begins.
